Obituary: Karl Lagerfeld, Channel’s Iconic Fashion Designer



Karl Otto Lagerfeld was a German creative director, fashion designer, artist, photographer and caricaturist who lived in Paris. He was born on 10 September, 1933 in Hamburg Germany and died on 19 February, 2019, at American hospital of Paris, neuilly- sun- Seine, France.

Karl Lagerfeld has passed away aged 85 in Paris, the house of Chanel has confirmed.
Lagerfeld began slowing down as he advanced into his mid 80s. He sparked concern by not appearing at the end of his Channel show in Paris in early 2019, a development the house attributed to his being “tired”. He die cause of pancreatic cancer.

Days later on, February 19, 2019, it was announced that the legendary design had passed away.
Among the many tributes, British fashion council cheif executive Caroline Rush noted: ” We are deeply saddened to learn the news of Karl Lagerfeld’s passing today. His univaled contribution to the fashion industry changed the way woman dress and perceive fashion.

He inspired generations of young designers and will continue to do so”.
The designer is said to have been working hard close up until his death, even giving his team instructions relating to the fendi autumn winter 2019 show, which is due to take place during Milan Fashion Week.

Lagerfeld is one of the prolific and celebrated fashion designers of all time and has headed up in the world, including fendi, chanel and his own namesake label, all three of which he acted as creative director for until his death. Chanel confirmed that Virginie viard, Chanel studio director and lagerfeld’s right hand woman, would be succeeding the designer as creative director.
His death was a painful and a very sad news for the fashion industry and his followers.

His goal in fashion was not just to create collections for people to wear, but to reinvent pieces that could easily be adopted into the modern world.

1954 : he won first prize in a contest organised by the Secretariat internation de la Laine ( international wool association) for a sketch of a coat.

1957 : he became art director for fashion designer Jean patou.

1965: he began working for fendi.

1975 : he became the first fashion designer to introduce a perfume, CHLOE, without having his own label.

1984 : he created his own fashion house, KARL LAGERFELD, While continuing his collaborations with chard and fendi.


The world is devastated over the news of Karl Lagerfeld’s passing.
